R. James Smathers CLU, Principal. Jim founded Smathers Insurance with a desire to provide his customers with complete insurance services. After graduating from Clarion State College in 1957, Jim was offered a teaching position in West Middlesex, but chose instead a position with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company selling Life insurance. During the next couple of years he noted that being a captive agent limited his ability to provide options to his customers. Jim left Metropolitan Life in 1962 to open his own agency. Jim received an appointment with Farmers Mutual Insurance Company of Marble, Pennsylvania, which gave Jim the opportunity to sell Homeowners and Fire insurance policies as well as Life insurance. Throughout his career, Jim has welcomed the challenges of the business, constantly learning as the market changes. In addition to his Property and Casualty license, he is licensed insurance broker, a Chartered Life Underwriter, and a Health Insurance Advisor specializing in Health Savings Accounts, Medicare Supplement plans, Medicare Advantage plans, and Part D Prescription Drug plans. Jim is also an active Real Estate Broker.
